AUSTRALIAN FRUIT SEASON
SHIPMENTS FROM VICTORIA Exports of fruit from Victoria this season up to a recent date comprised 830,392 cases of apples and 146,431 cases of pears. Arrangements are still being made for space on vessels sailing up to the first week in June, but future shipments will be small. The shipments have already exceeded early estimates as to the quantity of fruit that would be available for export this season, and prices have been better than, was expected, because the low prices paid for other primary produce suggested that a decline in values this season was likely Forward sales of apples were made on the basis of 10s 6d a case for Jonathans and up to 12s a case for Jonathans and up to 12s a case for Dunn's seedlings, but prices .actually realised have been higher than this, especially in the case of shipments to Hamburg, where prices have been satisfactory. Eearlier sales were affected by the presence in the market of American apples, but by the beginning of April the quality of the American fruit was beginning to decline owing to the long period of storage. Prices realised for Voctorian apples this season have been payable to growers.
