RICHMOND

A NELSON PIONEER (From n Correspondent) Mr Henry Hammond, of Faivhall, near Blenheim, who is visiting his daughter, Mrs W. C. Hammond of Richmond, is to-day celebrating his 89th birthday. Ue has the good wishes of many faithful friends. Mr Hammond is ;i son of the late Mr and Mrs David Hammond, who, with their family of three voung sons, left England on' 20th September, 1841, in the barque Lord Auckland, and arrived in Nelson on. 27th February, 1842. He, with his parents, spent the early years of his life in the Waimeas, engaged in farming pursuits, till, in 1870, lie removed to the Wairau, with his young wife and child. He established himself on his farm at Fairhail, where lie has lived ever since. Mr and Mrs Henry Hammond were most highly esteemed settlers, and a year or two ago celebrated their diamond wedding, surrounded by their family and many friends. Mrs Hammond passed away a year ago, loved and ever remembered- by a wide circle of friends; for she was a lady of rare graces and wonderful capabilities—n very charming personality. Mr Hammond is happy in re-visiting the scenes of his boyhood and early manhood, and his reminiscences are truly interesting. He enjoys fairly good health; and his mind is still keen and alert. It may lie noted that Mr William Cole of 88 Valley, v.as a fellow passenger with Mr Henry Hammond, on the Lord Auckland, and he is also a kindly and interesting personality.
