RIOT AT RANGOON
TROOPS DISPERSE MOB FIFTY KILLED AND SEVEN HUNDRED WOUNDED DISTURBANCES IN OTHER PLACES (United Presa Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 28th May, 9.20 a.m.) DELHI, 27th May. Savage rioting broke out at Rangoon this morning between Burman and Indian dock coolies. Casualties are estimated at 50 dead and over 700 injured. The Cameron Highlanders, who were called out, came into conflict with the rioteus and were immediately compelled to fire to disperse the mob. Troops are at present picketing the city with machine guns. Many bodies are said to have been thrown into the river. Terrible stories of atrocities to wo,men and children are reported, and in one case three Madrasi men were seized by a gang of maddened Burmans and cut to pieces. In otner instances there were small riots in which the police fired. The city is at present desolated. Mills, bazaars and shops are closed and all traffic is at a standstill. Following raids on the Lucknow police station machine guns were posted at various centres. A crowd of 5000 stormed the Bombay police quarters. The-assistant superintendent was killed. . - • At Dacca Moslems and Hindus clashed, many of the latter being murdered in the streets by gangs of Moslems. Armoured cars are at present patrolling the city.
