Tho Biightwater Public Hall was (jacked to overflowing on Sunday afternoon on the occasion of the annual service of the British and Foreign Bible Society. Tho platform was occupied by Canon F. Quintroll, chairman and president of the Society; Dr. Northcote Deck, the chief speaker, Rev. F. W. Marshall, vice-president., Mr Allen of the committee, Miss Daniels, treasurer, and the Rev. Mr Every, of Richmond. Dr. Northcote Deck delivered a very fine address on the power of the Word of God, and gave many striking illustrations from iiis work in the. Solomon Islands. He showed how cannibal chiefs and devil worshippers had been transformed into strong Christians and capable eiliaens. in spite of the prevailing ".Modernism" to-day the Bible was still winning its way into the hearts of men and would continue to do so. Dr. Northcote Deck made a strong appeal for the Bible and bis address will long be remembered. A collection on behalf of the Society realised £l2 18s.
Mrs H. A. Bourne-Webb, who for some years has been sole teacher of the Wairoa Gorge School and who has now resigned, was entertained last week at an "At Home" by the Wairoa Gorge residents. During (lie afternoon Miss M. Hunter presented Mrs Webb with a silver teapot suitably inscribed on behalf of the parents of the school children, and Miss Violet Murcott prese/ited a bouquet on behalf of, the schoql children, in token of the high esteem/ in which Mrs Webb is held.
Last Thursday evening Evangelist F. J. Marshall, of" Wanganui, who has accepted a call to the Spring Grove Church of Christ, was welcomed by the congregation at a social evening. Among those present to extend a welcome to the new minister and his family were Pastor F. J. Shyer, of Nelson, Pastor Price of Richmond, Brother Bell of Takaka, Mr Poole (Anglican) of Wakefield, and Rev. F. W. Marshall (Presbyterian) of Brightwater. Mr F. J. Marshall, besides being a good churchman, is a keen enthusiast in the social life and the district should benefit greatly by having Mr and Mrs Marshall and family in its midst.
