CAR FREIGHT

INTERiSLAND SERVICE « REDUCTION TO BE ASKED FOB, (By Telegraph—Special, to " T he Mail") CHB.ISTCHURCH, 28th March. Though its request has been refused .several times the South Island (N.Z.) Motor Union to-day decided to make .further representations to. the Union Steamship Company concerning a reduction in the charge'made for transfer of motor cars from the South to the North Island and vice versa. The Unhii Company advised that it was felt it would not he warranted in reducing tbs freight rates on cars between Pictcn and Wellington. Mr 11. C. Barley said the company did a large business in carrying new cars from Wellington. The company had pointed out that the English Channel tariff vas greater than that for Cook Strait and that the company had already made a 15 per cent, reduction for the return fare. He moved that further representations be made. T\li- F. Johnson' seconded the motion, lie. thought if two or more members of the Union travelled with a car there should be a rebate on the fares. Sir Freeman thought motorists should be militant over the question. There were 130.0C0 .motorists in the North Island and 70,0n0 in the South. How better could the tourist traffic of the Dominion be facilitated than by assisting motorists to travel in both islands? The Government could assist bv co-operating with the motoring organisations. The tariff at present was loo* dear, lie knew that the U.S.S. Co. was a dividend company, but it existed to help the public. The motion was carried. Sir Johnston said it was not an occasion when militancy was advisable.
