SLIGHT CHECK

UNEMPLOYMENT IN UNITED

STATES

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright)

WASHINGTON, 27th March. The American Federation of Labour in an estimate based on their trade union returns, reported the first decrease in __ unemployment since last August. Unions of 24 cities reported that 21 per cent, of their members were without work, compared with 22 per cent, in February.

Mr Green, president of the Federation, stated: ‘ While these figures show that the rising unemployment has been checked for the country as a whole, the improvement is not yet general. Only ten of the cities reporting showed a decrease in unemployment, in ten cases unemployment was still increasing in March, while in four there was no change. The greatest improvement is in the seafaring trades, while the unemployment of musicians has increased.”
