A DRASTIC EXPEDIENT

(Received 12th March, 10.5 a.m.) LONDON, 11th March. The Australian section of the British Manufacturers’ Association hurriedly held a meeting to consider the rumoured super-tariff in Australia. Sir Arthur Balfour said that it would be a drastic expedient to cure a temporary situation. Experience had proved it easy to raise a tariff and very difficult to lower it. EXEMPTION OF BRITISH GOODS SUGGESTED (Received 12th March, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, 11th March. Tho Australian section of the British Manufacturers’ Association has cabled Melbourne headquarters as follows: — “Most distressed at suggested tariff increase. Propose if increase deemed necessary That British goods should be excepted.”
