MRS PANKHURST
STATUE TO SUFFRAGETTE LEADER UNVEILED BY MR BALDWIN IMPOSING CEREMONY (Uuited Press Association—By Electric; Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, 6th March. Mr Baldwin unveiled the statue, of Mrs Pankhurst at Victoria Tower Gardens. The, Metropolitan Police Baud, representing tlie organisation with which Mrs Pankhurst was somewhat familiar, was a striking feature of the ceremony. They played the works of four women composers. Dame Ethel Soyth, a veteran suffragette, who was an imposing figure in academic robes, personally conducted two compositions which she wrote during the women's struggle for political equality. The statue, which is the work of Mr A. J. Walker ami Sir Herbert Baker, was draped in purple, white and green, the familiar colours of the Women's Social and Political Union.
Wreaths were piled high around the jbase, one being inscribed: "Mother, from Christobel. ' All traffic on the Embankment was stopped until tho close of the ceremony. Mr Baldwin said that they were united to dedicate the monument under the shadow of the House of Parliament, and it had fallen to his lot to> participate in the ceremony as one who for many years opposed Mrs Pankhurt's work, but eventually put the coping stone to her labours.
