PASTURE TOP-DRESSING

"PEDIGREE" GRASSES INTERESTING FIGURES BY MINISTER OF HEALTH I g The collection of information reM'ive" to areas top-dressed is a comparative innovation, the first collection beifig made in 1927. The increased areas returned as top-dressed over the three years is very significant. The figures are as follow: Tons. Manure. 1926-7—1,414,264 acres 179,748 1927-8...1,834,366 acres 237,602 1928-9—2,534,496 acres 307,897 i One of the outstanding results of work' at the Plant Breeding Station at Palmerston North during the present seasonhas been the remarkable results obtained from top-dressing pastures composed of pure strains-of grasses, compared with the same treatment given to ordinary mixed pasture. It is quite apparent that to obtain maximum results from topdressing it is essential lhat fertilisers be applied to "pedigree" grasses, as they, in common with other pedigree stock, are capable of giving maximum iv suits for money expended. During the past few years, said the Minister of Agriculture, outstanding investigational work has been done by the Agricultural Department's agrostology section on- our grass lands—representing New Zealand's most important crop. This work has had a very -strong practical side and appeal, and has been of great value to farmers.
