NEW ALLOY
EFFICIENCY OF PLUGS Science has made another contribution to the automotive industry. A new alloy for spark plug electrodes has been developed, i(f is reported, that requires 50 per cent, less voltage to produce a spark, assures constant sparking voltage for the life of the plug, permits easier starting in cold weather and minimises gap adjusting. MORE HINTS THE CARE OF THE CAR AN ELUSIVE KNOCK A very mysterious engine knock is often traceable to a loose gland-nut on the water-pump. On tightening this nut the knock immediately disappears.
KEEP THE FAN-BEABING OILED
It is a wise policy to keep the fanbearing well lubricated. Wear at this point will give rise to a very irritating knock or rattle, which may prove very hard to locate. GOOD OIL AN ECONOMY It pays to use good-grade oil. Economy in this respect will prove a false economy. A much higher grade of oil is necessary for the automobile engine than for the steam engine, and almost any other kind of machine, because the* gas engine is subject to greater heat and poor oils "crack" and decompose into'carbon. This carbon will not only get on the piston head and valve-heads, but it will get into the piston rings and prevent them from functioning properly. SIMPLE ANTI-DAZZLE DEVICE Take two half-plate or postcard-size such as is used in theatre work to give photographic plates and clean off the sensitive film by immersion in hot soda water. Cut a piece of blue gelatine, moonlight effect, place same between the plates, and bind the edges with/adhesive tape. Attach the slide to the windscreen with a paper clip and adjust so that, by moving the head slightly from the normal, the driver can bring the blue slide between the lamps and his eves.
