PRESS COMMENT

ON NEW MINISTRY LONDON, Bth June. Tlie “Daily Herald,” commenting on tlie new Ministry, claims that Mr MacDonald.’s is truly a national Government. “The eyes of expectant millions throughout the world are upon the new Ministry. It will not disappoint them.” The "Daily Chronicle” states that it is a stronger Cabinet than that of 1924. Some had foreseen features such as Air Justice Sankey’s appointment, which is universally approved, but they had not foreseen the appointment of Air Webb, which will be regarded as equally admirable. The “Daily Express” states that Air MacDonald would make a good job. He had bpcn guided by the necessity for administering departments, and, ability to explain and defend departments in the House. Judged from these viewpoints the Cabinet unquestionably is strong. Atiss Bondfield’s appointment possessed novelty, hut she had the respect of tlie House and would do well. Altogether it was an impressive Cabinet and the nation hoped, and believed, that before it had run. its course much good would have been done. The “Morning Post” says it is probably as good a Cabinet as a Socialist Prime Minister could have formed. It asks: “Does not ATr Jowitt’s conversion prove that Liberalism is not a harrier against Socialism but a bridge to it.” "The “Daily Telegraph” states that Air Henderson's appointment can hardly he welcomed. Tt is well to remember that ho went to Geneva in 1924 and initialled an ill-omened protocol. Air Webb no doubt lias been awaiting a call to the Upper House.

The “jDui]y Mail” says: “What the country wants is sober, businesslike administration. If Air MacDonald gives that his Government may last a good deal longer than pome prophets imagine,” “The Times” says Air Webb’s organising mind should have a chance to display itself. .No field oilers a more promising opportunity than that allotted to him.”
