HAWKE CUP A WIN FOR MANAWATU NELSON FAIL IN SECOND INNINGS (By Telegraph—Special to ‘‘The Mail' 1 ) _ PALMERSTON N., 2nd April. Nelson failed badly to-day and lost by six wickets. Continuing this morning in bitterly cold weather nothing went right, the temperature dropped over 30 degrees in the last few_ days and players were securing heavier’clothing and played throughout in sweaters. ■Up till. Monday night Nelson were in a ' good position and appeared a shade the better team, but were outplayed to-day. Continuing with three wickets down for 57 and a total lead of 84, they were in a solid position, but the remaining seven wickets fell for the absurd addition of 36 runs. Bad batting was the only explanation, although none of the leg before decisions met with approval. Requiring 121 to win Mauawatu opened very slowly and every run had to be earned. The wicket played better in the Fourth innings than at any , other stage of the game. The first 12 overs produced 12 runs and then Searell bowled 10 overs and secured two wickets for nine runs, and at lunch the score was two far 54. On. restarting Manawatu’s most dangerous. batsmen, Gallichan and Baumber, were dismissed with the score at only 68, and Nelson still had a chance. McVicar and Norris then dug in, however, and play was again deadly slow. Bowling changes were rung on at both ends throughout, but .although both men gave chances, they remained together till the end. Searell had to leave when 30 runs were wanted. Altogether it took the holders over 200 minutes to get the 121 to win. Additional scores:— A. Newman, b Tarrant 21 Hawkes, b Gallichan 16 J. Newman, not out 25 S.
