HAWKE CUP MANAWATU V. NELSON VISITORS LEAD ON FIRST INNINGS (By Telegraph—Special to "The Mail") PALMERSTON N., Ist April. Nelson made a disappointing finish to their innings, J. Newman being bowl-, '.' eel with the first ball of the day and R. Newman in the next over. Manawatu opened very slowly, the- » first ten overs producing only two » singles off the bat, and 16 overs 6 runs. ; A. Newman's first over gathered in - ■■ two wickets for none and four were down for 26, but the total then went to 90. At lunch six were down for 92, Baumber (not out) 47, being the only batsman to make any showing. •■ * After lunch Baumber should have been run out by yards, but the bowler knocked the bails off with his legs in ; taking the ball and, although he then took all the stumps out of the ground could not get them out in time. This was a costly mistake, as Baumber went on to 88 which is nearly twice as many as the rest of the team. He . hit freely, mostly daring hooks off his . wicket, and three sixers over the leg « boundary off straight balls. With a lead of 27 Nelson were in a handy position, especially as the ing pair started well. At 18 Neale swung Me Vicar to long leg, but Wild, running 20 yards, took a great catch. Further bad luck followed, Ralfe going" • without scoring, to, a bad leg before decision. Eden was shaping confidently when snapped up at the wicket. A. Newman and Hawkes, although not comfortable, hung on gamely till an appeal against the light at 5.15 was successful.. . Hawkes gave two hard chances. The wicket has not played too well at any stage, and will not improve, so,, if Nelson can get 150 they should still have a fair chance.
