ELUDING “OBEY” VOW
POLISH Ginls DELAY WEDDINGS
TILL NEW RITE IN FORCE Tho number of marriages in Poland greatly diminished during December, since most Polish girls decided to postpone their weddings until January in order not to have to promise ohetlienco to their husbands. From 1614 the Roman Catholic Church of Poland observed tho rite approved for that country by Pope Paul V. In 1920, almost immediately after tho re-estab-lishment of their independence of Poland, the Polish Bishops found it necessary to introduce certain changes into the rite. The Pope approved of tho proposals, and the new rite will be introduced beginning with January Ist, 1929. One change concerns the marriage oath, which was not the same for men and women. The bridegroom promised “love, faithfulness and marital fidelity,” while the bride had to promise “love, faithfulness and obedience.” Under the new rite the. marriage oath will be the same for both parties. Tho prospective bridegrooms were, in many cases, greatly aroused by their decision, and a number of marriages in Warsaw have been entirely broken off. i t&L'tSZiizr . ,■ $
