BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING (From Our Own Correspondent) At the monthly meeting of the Ityongll Council held on Tuesday evening there were present: The Mayor (Mr J, A. Wallace) and Councillors E. >S. Wratt, S. J’. Clay. A. Canton, J. C. Doves and k. York. v.rßeforo proceeding with the usual business of ! the meeting, the Mayor and Councillor Bcyes feelingly referred to the death of the lato Councillor Staples and ',tho great loss sustained by the Council. All present stood in silence us a mark of: respect. It was decided (the -Mayor and Councillor Boycs) that a letter of condolence bfl forwarded to Alt's Staples and family in their; recent sad bereavement.

'Accounts .amounting to £s32 19s lOd (gc'peral account £llO 19s 6d, electric light account £172 Os 4d) were presented and passed fov payment, leaving, a \>antc overdraft of £2812 Bs. Other 'account? were. Electric Loan Account on fixed deposit £l5O, Current Account £35 143 fid: total £lB5 14s 8d; Cemetery Account-,at P.p.5.8.,.£29 Os lOd.; Domain Account at P. 0.5.8., £2l 18s lid.

CORRESPONDENCE

The, Local government Lean’s Board wrote, regarding 'the Council’s desire to raise a loan of £lsoo for the purpose, of erectiqg a public library, rest room apd’ municipal offices, to the effect that it will be necessary for the Council to pbtain the sanction of the Local Goveiiimenh Loans Board. When completed application is received the investigations required by section 5 of the Local Government Loans Board Act argl rules of procedure would be undertaken. On the motion of Councillors York and Clay, it was agreed that an architect be appointed to draw up plans and specifications.,for the new .library and municipal buildings. The appointment of an architect was left to "the Finance Committee with power to act. •I:IMr.;E. Brewerton drew the Council s attention ;to the excessive grovyth of grass and noxious weeds in Courtney ■street .and asked that something be done. —Referred to Works Committee. ■Mr. J. Lovell, tendered his resignation as caretaker, of the Motucka cemetery.—Letter taken in committee. Mr. G. Ingram made application for .post of dog-tax collector. Applications for position for current year are, to be called for.

Mr A.-Griffin forwarded plan of proposed library and municipal buildings, the'estimate being £1591), including strong-room. The matter was deferred for. consideration.

It was decided/on the motion of Councillors Wratt and Boyes that no action bq taken to fill the extraordinary j vacancy caused by the death of Councillor. M. Staples. It w.as. pointed out that the Oddfel- . lows’;. Lodge meetings would now, in all probability, come in conflict with those of. the Council. The Mayor and clerk were deputed to confer'with the secretary of the Lodge in order to come to a,n arrangement suitable to both parties. : .}te subdivision of property in Poole Street) OWflel by Mr H. Delany, it was decided that a letter be sent to Messrs Smith and Thorp pointing out the sectiqns of the Act concerning sub-division, which must be complied with prior to the Council’s approval being granted. FOREMAN’S REPORT The foreman (Mr G. ''King) reported as ’follows':—"High street.—The main streetS'and footpaths received special atfentmn’ and a general clean up was macle in preparation for the season’s 1 iestivities. The maintenance portion also' received attention, 14 yards of Moutere gravel being supplied at a cost of 6s 6d per yard, including Tolling. Fearon 'street. —This sti'eet has been .widened to th 6 full width and footpaths made for a distance of seven chains. Unfortunately the'had weather prevented the metalling being carried dut, only 12 yards of metal being delivered. Whakarewa street. —The worst holes, in this street were attended to, and 9 yards of metal wpre supplied and well rolled at a cost of 7s per yard. Machinery.—The whole plant has been overhauled and cleaned. The old fire engine has been placed under cover at Mr Rowling’s garage. General. —All the pumps have been attended to and new washers supplied. Two hundred, pegs have been made ready for the engineering survey of the main highway after ’the holidays. The rubbish baskets have been supplied and placed in position. I wish to draw the Council’s attention to the state of the fence round; the Domain Reserve and also round the cemetery; both are in very bad repair. The chapel requires a few new weather boards and also 'urgently requires a new coat of paint, I have hqd a complaint that one c*f the microcarpa' trees is disturbing the concrete around one of the graves. I would suggest that this one tree be cut down. I also wish to put another suggestion before the Council, that all limbs to a height of four feet on all the trees in the cemetery he cut off and the undergrowth be cleaned up .to prevent fives ; and that a man be put on to clean all graves of noxious/weeds.’’ Arising out of the report the foreman was empowered to make'the necessary repairs to the Domain and cemetery fences and to repair and paint the chapel, also to have the cemetery cleaned. , The' Mayor’s action in authorising the extension of the electric light on New Year’s night to 3 a.m. was approved. It was proposed (Councillors Boyes and York) that the R.S.A. have the use of the electric light system already extended to the beach for their gala on Ist February. The electrical engineer (Mr J. G. Heath) submitted his monthly report, which was read and adopted.
