GRAVELLING BATON SADDLE
ANSWER TO CRITICISM T When tenders for metalling the Baton Saddle road were being discussed at today’s meeting of the Waimea County Council Councillor Jones said _he would like to point out that the £250 required to lift the Government £ for £
grant had been provided equally by the VVangapeka and Dovedale ridings. The speaker and Councillor Kenyon had been subjected to considerable criticism over, this metalling and it had been stated that the royalty paid on coal carted over the road would go into the general account. It was however understood that the royalty would go to the two ridings. They had provided the money and it was only fair they should ' receive the royalty. Councillor Jones accordingly moved that the royalty be divided between the two ridings iri equal shares. The motion was seconded bv Councillor Kenyon. ’Councillor Hewetson opposed the motion and said that the Council had been asked to contribute £SO out of the general account. Councillor Kenyon pointed out that they had'asked for £3O only as £2O had to come out of general account in any case. It had to be remembered that this was a new industry in the Countv and as such should be* encouraged. He did not think any of the County ratepayers would complain. Councillor Wilkinson supported the motion which was carried.
