INDIAN REPATRIATES

DEPARTURE FROM FIJI

United Proaß Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright (Australian Press Association)

SUVA, Bth January

The Sutlej sailed from Calcutta this afternoon with 654 Indian repatriates who took in excess of £20,000. Of the passengers hv the Sutlej about 150 Sikhas \yi 11 probably proceed to New Zealand after studying for the education test o'f the Dominion in Fiji, their fares being paid by compatriots in New Zealand.

INFORMATION MISLEADING

WELLINGTON. This Day

From inquiries in official sources it appears that the information in the cablegram from Suva regarding Indians is not based on facts known io the customs authorities in New Zealand. It is also apparent that the message was sent in ignorance of the conditions under which Indians are permited to come into New Zealand as permanent residents. A permit is necessary under the Act of 1920. They can land as visitors or for business reasons on proofs of their intentions and that they intend to leave again within six months.
