FIRST SIGHT’S WIN (By. Telegraph—Special to “The Mail”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. First Sight and Rattle Colours carried two-thirds of the total investments in the Teschemaker’s Handicap yesterday at Tirnaru, the former being 300 tickets better favourite, and the finish was fought out between the pair, . First Sight gaining a well deserved victory. Solrose acted as pacemaker from the start and was well clear of Vaward, Rattle Colours, Prickles, and First Sight at the home turn. Battle Colours led into the home run and was challenged by First Sight inside the distance, and although he stuck to his task gamely, First Sight wore him down over the final stages and heat .him by a length. Prickles was a length and a half away, half length in'front of Vaward. The winner was not favoured with Hie best of passages. He endeavoured to bore out at the turn going out of the straight, and interfered wjtli Rattle Colours, who in turn, collided with Prickles, the trio , losing ground. He again, got sent back at the far turn, but once clear in the run home he put in his characteristic finishing effort. Battle Colours had every chance, but failed to stay on when expected. Prickles was badly treated at the start, and was last of the quintette to move off. She then made up the ground quickly, but was badly hampered going out of the straight. She finished on in a creditable mariner, and did well to gain third money under the circumstances. Vaward failed ~to see out the journey. GREAT STAR UNLUCKY (By Telegraph—Special to "The Mail”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Great Star registered a smart performance when he won the Tycho Hack Handicap yesterday. The horse was in front all the way, and never gave his opponents a chance. Unfortunately his rider lost the fruit of his victory, as the rider could not draw the weight. Great Star, handicapped at 8.13, was ridden by an apprentice, R. Eickerby, who was entitled to a 51b allowance. lie weighed out at 8.8 1-4, hut after the race he could do only 8.6 J. Even with a pound allowed by the Rules of Racing lie was half a pound short. A very simple explanation is that the lad’s carelessness accounted for a loss of weight. Great Star is a smart galloper who can be improved a lot, and so may make amends for this bad luck very shortly.
