(Received 22ml November, 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, 21st November. At a meeting of the Australian Mercantile Land Company, Mr 11. R. Cairo, presiding, called attention to two very important events, emanating from two widely separated points of the political horizon, which tend to encourage the hope that statesmen were beginning to iecogui.se tin- pastoral industry's value to Australia, lie referred lo Mr iMcCracken's Commission to report on Queensland pastoral industry, and Mr Bruce's Commission of pastoral inquiry throughout. Australia, 'the report of the Queensland Commission betokens an earnest desire lo deal with vast areas of Crown lands in a statesmanlike manner. Mr Cairo referred appreciatively to remarks in the reports of both commissioners regarding the great increase in costs of production, notably wages, and quoted n paragraph in that connection from the Federal Commission report, lie regretled thai efforts to interest pastoralists in a well-considered scheme of scientific research have not niel, with the success they deserve, lor there is still a wide field of research in the direction oi the reintrodiiction or restoration of droughtinsisting plants and grasses, the eradication of. noxious weeds, animals, and parasites, and the treatment and prevention of diseases.
