Thousands .....who heretofore lived fairly comfortably' have. been reduced almost to pauperism. AS t.hjb result of the transfer of the capital to Nanking, and they are now largely, preoccupied with the problem of scraping somehow through what threatens .to-be an exceedingly hard winter for- the bulk of the population. ■.
