JUDGE MADE A MISTAKE
PICTURES SHOW MOLLISON IN THIRD PLACE
MELBOURNE, 15th October
There is little doubt that the Oaulficld judge erred on Saturday when he awarded third place in the Guineas to Merab instead of Mollison.
Photographs of the finish support the contention that Mollison was a length in front of Merab, and Dempsey, rider of the latter, agrees with Daniels, who was on Mollison, that the official decision was incorrect.
Many of the onlookers were surprised when Balmerino was given the race, their belief being that Ramulus had hung on well enough to win. Neither of the riders, M. McCarten and Ashley Reed, was certain of the result until the numbers were semaphored, so the official estimate of the winning margin, a short half-head, was probably correct.
