Thomas Finnerty, 32, married, was acting as line umpire and running up the line to signal "touch," when the opposing wing three-quarters, diving far«the hall near the line, collided at the 25 flag, knocking the flag and Finnerty over. The crack could be heard all over the ground;and it was thought that the Ihig stick had been smashed. It was ascertained, however, that Finnerty had suffered most in the collision, receiving a fracture of both bones of the lower left leg. He vvns removed to hospital.
