ENTERTAINMENTS,

EMPIRE THEATRE

The Bohemian life and romance of the circus was never more realistically portrayed than in "The Unknown," a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer special production showing at the Empire Theatre tonight. The story centres around the lives of circus performers, Lon Chaney as the "armless wonder" being the centre of an unusually gripping drama. This armless player is not without love—a love that lew. women possess; but the dark-eyed daughter of the circus proprietor feels only a sisterly affection for his friendly protection. Rival claims then sweep this pulsating story into stark drama, intense emotional Suspense, deep sacrifice, and true love. The "Music Master' a William Fox special is also showing tonight.'This story is adapted from the famous stage play, and has Alec B. Francis in the title role, supported by Lois Moran, and "Big" Bill Tilden. Prices are as usual and the plans at Cull's. "Ben Hur" plans open at 9 a.m. to-morrow at Cull's.

DAISY HALL TO-NIGHT'S RECITAL The recital to be given by Daisy Hall at the Regent Theatre this evening, will rank as one of tho most notable performances ever given in Nelson by an individual star. The programme contains some Tare gems from a large repertoire, specially selected to suit the coloratura soprano voice. Daisy Hall is gifted with what one writer has described as "a. beautiful golden throat, endowed by nature. Her voice has Otvt unmistakable resonance of great artists who visit us at rare intervals. She is a brilliant pupil of the Bel Canto school, Italy. Her voice flows flawless and gol-den'-without effort to the appointed end and lier coloratura work glows with a congenial warmth. It is not often that nature endows a singer with such an attractive stage.presence, and charm of manner, that, with her first bow to her audience she r immediately gives that magnetism (so rarely noticeable to-day) that can hold enthralled even the most unconcerned. A few moments suffice to hold all." More could be said .of the great merits of this talented little New Zealander. who is now going back to Italy to take her place amongst the world's leading artists, where her progress will be watched with keen interest. That Nelson will show appreciation to the prima-donna, who has returned for a- short time to her home country goes without saying, and it is hoped'that a large attendance will greet her this evening. Patrons are requested to be seated at tho advertised time of commencement, as the management announce that no person will bo admitted to the theatre during a number. Daisv Hall will be assisted bv Miss Wilding at the piano, and the Regent orchestra. Special concessions have been arranged for students.
