BEER OR NO BEER?
AT DAIRY COMPANY'S ANNUAL MEETING VOTE TO REGAIN THE LIQUOR', (By 'felPKrapu.-SpeciaL to "The Mail") AUCKLAND, 3i'd August. ' The suppliers of the Hinnera Dairy Company at their annual meeting yesterdny diaciissod not milk but beer. Mr J. F. Vosper (Matamata) moved that in future no alcohol be supplied at the mooting of suppliers. Last year, Mr Vosper declared, a barrel of beer bad: boon rolled into the hall in which ,the annual meeting was held. A Voice: "Are you sure it was not cream'!"' Mr Vosper: "No; it was beer and not superfine, either." (Laughter). 'I strongly object to this company paying out any money for liquor," said Mr Vosper. "I have never heard of this before. H a man wants beer or whisky let him pay for it himself, If the man .who arranges for the .liquor is here 1 will debate it with him. , E'yeryono knows I arn an ardent prohibitionist, but it is not for this reason I am complaining-.'.' A Voice: "I don't triind who pays for my beer." (Laughter), The chairman of directors. (Mr J. E. West) said there was a. cosmopolitan crowd present and some liked and some disliked beer. They must all agree that they had been given-a very estimable lunch and many had enjoyed'the tea provided. It was all a matter or*personal tasto and the meeting should decide what was to be done.
A Voice: "Don't take any of my money for tea, bocaiiso I nevor bad any, ' Mr McNnb.saicl he believed in looking oh the side of economy, but he,, would prefer' to see- both beer and tea; rejected rather than.'beer alone. The! pnnciplo applied to both. , . |i Mr Vosper: "I have a conscience and I want to see'this business run on clean. IrusmesK lines. Suppliers do not build up. the capital in this concern for a ratioiv.of beer." (Hear, hear), ./Mr.McNab: f "I ; notice you, made, it your business to see whether we had beer 'here to-day." (Laughter). Mr Vosper: "Oh, that's all right." Mr McNab: "Yes, I saw you having a good old 'Nosey Parker.' That's just typical." (Laughter). . The chairman said it would be just as well to cut off the liquor whether harm was done or not. An amendment"was moved that those who wanted beer should pay for it, but found no seconder. Mr VospeVs motion was rejected by 22 votes to 17. .■_'■.
