NO JOBS FOR BOYS
POSITION IN CHRISTCHURCH hundreds waiting for work fßy Telegraph.—Special to “The Mail”) ' UHRISTCHUR-CH, This Dav. Ihe labour market among hoys' in Christchurch has not improved since the beginning of the year, and many hoys have yet to be placed in work. 'On its books the Y.M.C.A. has several hundreds of boys waiting for jobs. Neither pnvate nor public employers are in a position at present to take, boys on, and the result is that every advertisement lor a boy is answered by a large and eager queue. Government departments cannot find positions' for boys at present, either. Among private' employers for the most part the trades cannot take apprentices, as many of the quotas are luit. This is particularly so with regard to plumbing. ile apprenticeship quota is not *ull, but the employers are unwil*vSirtoitake on apprentices because of the high rates of wages wanted. Engineering and electrical yvork ’canhot absorb very many boys at present, in fact, under present conditions of apprenticeship employers find it hard to give much work to boys at all. The result is there are hundreds out of work.
