GREAT OPPORTUNITY

FARMERS’ EXCURSION TO CANTERBURY

The extensive nature of the arrangements made and the entertainment, to he provided for the visiting Nelson and Marlborough farmers to Canterbury lor the week commencing Monday, 23rd July, is given in the following outline: On Monday, (he passengers will travel by the special train which leaves i'icton at, 6.30 a.m. and Blenheim at, 7.30 a.m. and will arrive at Ashburton that evening in time for dinner. On Tuesday they will be. accorded a civic, reception in the Square alter which all will join, ears for a- trip round one side of the Ashburton County calling cn route to inspect stud stock. After lunch in Ashburton, the party will travel over the well known grain country about Mcthven, again visiting stud farms. Afternoon tea has been arranged for them at Methven and in the evening a social will be tendered to the visitors at Ashburton.

On Wednesday morning the excursionists will entrain for Christchurch (accommodation again being booked on the train.) On arrival at Christchurch, the visiting farmers will be taken to the Addington sale yards to watch the Metropolitan Market. The party will be entertained at the yards by the Canterubry Sale Yards Company. After luncheon the visitors will be the guests of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association and a visit will bo made under their guidance to a large number of factories, buses being provided for this purpose by the Association. On Thursday the Canterbury Agricultural College at Lincoln, will bo visited, the excursionists travelling by train between Christchurch and Lincoln. At Lincoln the many experimental plots in grasses, grain, etc., will be shown and lectures will be given by those associated with the college upon cognate subjects. Lectures will also be given upon pigs, and some, most interesting experiments in feeding will be explained by Mr Scott.

The visitors will also be addressed by Dr. Hilgendorf. Very complete arrangements will be made to ensure that the visitors shall have an opportunity of gaining the fullest information regarding tho work of the College jn the time available. For this purpose, Mr Alexander, the Direct or of the College will receive the excursionists on arrival and divide them up into convenient sized parties for inspecting the place. Luncheon will be provided by the Board of Directors and a return to Christchurch will be made in the evening.

.On Friday the party will join the train at Christchurch for Balcairn where the championship ploughing match is being held. The farmers of Balcairn are making special arrangements to ensure that this feature of the outing shall give pleasure to the visitors. Fuller particulars in regard to this will be available later. Tlio party will return to Christchurch by train the same evening and on Saturday morning at 7.55 they will leave on the return journey, arriving home at Blenheim and Picton on Saturday evening. The splendid programme arranged for their entertainnemt and the hospitality exhibited by all those concerned in the various localities should ensure a splendid patronage to this opportune excursion for which' the Railway Department, in conjunction with the motor proprietors working between Wharauni and Parnassus, has provided an exceptionally low fare.
