ADVANTAGES OF SOUTHAMPTON

FOR LANDING APPLES

STATEMENT BY MR H. F

STEPJI ENS

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright Australian Press Association

LONDON, 14th April

Mr H. E. Stephens, representative of tho New Zealand Fruit Board, strikingly points out, the advantage in landing fruit at Southampton. He says it is cheaper arid quicker to bring apples to Covenfc Garden from Southampton than from Tilbury or King George dock, owing to cheaper port rates" and better facilities for landing and despatching. He instances the case of this season's first arrivals on 23rd March, when Australian apples were landed at London and New Zealand at Southampton within two hours of each other. The following morning 8.000 cases of New Zealand apples were on the market and only 7UU cases of Australian.

Mr Stephens is urging the I'orl of London Authority to come into line with Southampton. He is also pointing out that better facilities exist at Hamburg as the Continental distrjbtltine (cntre that: at London.

AMERICAN SUPPLIES

UN.EXPECTFD COMPETITION

LONDON. 14th April. Fruit traders are disappointed at the prices realised for Australian and New Zealand apples. This is attributed partly to heavy supplies of good, cheap oranges, also the unexpected competition of Oregon Newtons. Recently these have been comparatively scarce and only of moderate quality.' but the Americans apparently reserved some of their best and dumped many thousands of cases of good quality on' the English markets this week.

N.Z. APPLES POP CANADA

(By Telegraph.—Special to "The Mail")

AUCKLAND, This Day

A consignment of 11,500 cases of New Zealand apples will be despatched from Auckland for Montreal by the steamer Port Napier this week. A smaller shipment to Canada last year met with keen demand, and prices compared favourably with London rates. Nelson apples account for about 4.600 cases, the remainder being drawn from Auckland orchards extending from Te Kauwhata to Iluapai. With the exception of 400 cases ol Jonathans the Auckland consignment consists of the Delicious.
