ARRIVAL OF IONIC
SEVERE STORM ENCOUNTERED

AUCKLAND, This Day
Fi\-p days before liar arrival here last evening from Southampton, tiro Tonic with 200 passengers aboard, encountered a severe storm lasting twenty hours. Captain Jackson said that in his thirty years’ experience, he had never encountered sueh a big sea approaching New Zealand. The decks were swept fore and aft. Mr Coombes, a passenger to Dunedin, was caught in the heavy wash on the forward deck, thrown heavily against the rails, and suffered painful Abrasions. Another third-class passenger was almost lost, overboard at the same time.
A good proportion of the immigrants are of Scottish descent, the majority, it not'all, bejng nominated by relatives or frie'hds.
