A SERIOUS LOSS
DEATH OF NOTED JERSEY COW SYBIL'S GIPSY A serious loss to Mr L-\ W. Cornwall and to the Jersey breed of New Zealand generally occurred on Tuesday morning through the death of the imported cow Sybil's Gipsy, says the "Taranaki Herald". Sybil's Gipsy was bred on the Island of jersey ami was a daughter of Sybil's Gamboge 4th. an intensely-bred Oxford bull who won first prize over the Island on the merits of live of his female progeny. On her dam's side Sybil's Gipsy 'traced chiefly to Golden Lad blood. Prior to importation she was shown on the Island as a yearling and wiui first prize at St. Martin's Parish Show. In New Zealand she was shown at Hamilton, when she won first as a two-year-old and reserve championship and was considered to he one of the most beautiful Jerseys ever shown in the Dominion. Her first calf, Sybil's Oxford Noble, a son of the imported bull Clarion, was purchased by .Mr Cornwall as a yearling, and is still retained in his herd. Ids progeny whereever shown have been prize-winners. One sou won first in the yearling class at the last local show, while another daughter was second in a large class ot heifers. About 18 months iig.. she had a very severe attack of blond poisoning from which she almost su mi nil ied. Six months ago she drop ped ii beautiful heifer calf lo Mr 11. Salway's imported bull Victor's Hand some Prince. The calf, like its mother. was broken-coloured and showed sufficient merit to win first prize in a large heifer class at the last Taranaki show. Two iir three days ago Sybil's Gipsy appeared out of suits, and though it was not considered lier illness was anything serious she suddenly expired litis morning, it is assumed, from impaction owing tu the very dry pasture.
