CUP FAVOURITE BEATEN BY NINCOMPOOP

(By Telegraph—Special to "Th» Mail")

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.

The fancied Dunedin Cup ■ candidate Thorndale lost caste by being pointlessly beaten by Nincompoop in a seven furlong task at Ricearton on Saturday. Both were together to the straight, but at this point Nincompoop left his companion, and ran home an,easy winer in 1 32 1-5. Nincompoop had C. Emerson in the. saddle, while W. Brown was on Thorndale, and so the latter had a substantial concession in weight.

Nincompoop gave an attractive display and was eased up over the concluding stages so that the time recorded must be considered good. It was certainly a promising Cup trial and the Absurd gelding will be in the picture during the race on Thursday, but it is questioned if he will successfully master the full mile and a half. No excuse could Vie made for Thorndale. He galloped well for the first few furlongs, but from that onwards, although vigorously ridden, was outclassed. This was not his proper form, and he will still be in demand for the. Dunedin Cup in which he will ridden by A. E. Ellis.
