GALA DAY

A meeting of all men interested in the holding of a gala at the beach on Boxing Day took place on Wednesday evening in the Horticultural Hall, Major D. W. Talbot occupying the chair. The principal -business before the meeting was the setting up of sub-commit-tees to organise the various entertainments'' in connection with the function. Those elected to take charge of each section were: Messrs J. Heath (sports), R, McGregor (side shows), P. G. Motfatt (concert), D. W. Talbot (boating), S. P. Clay (advertising). Major Talbot was deputed to interview the Anchor Shipping, Company re running a boat from Nelson to Motueka on Boxing Day. On the motion of Messrs McGregor and Heath, it was decided to authorise the expenditure of a gum (not exceeding £5) by the citizens committee,on extra sanitary arrangements- for the gala, the erection of same to be left to the executive committee: The question of ribbons for Boxing Day was taken in hand by the advertising committee. Mr Trevena (secretary) reported that Mr Dawson, proprietor of a carnival show at- present in Motueka, had generously offered to donate to the Gala Day Committee half the proceeds of his Monday evening’s entertainment. The offer was accepted. A further meeting at which the subcommittees would report progress \vas arranged for Tuesday, 13th December.

AT THE BEACH

Improvements for the popularising of the Motueka beach are still being effected by members of the Society; and the following local business firms have donated timber for walk to spring board: Messrs W. and W. F. Stilwell, Heath Bros, and Kelly and Calder, the canvas covering on spring hoard being the gift of Mr W. Coppins.

RECITAL

Pupils of Miss Mitchell-Brown, L.A.B. gave a recital in St. Thomas’s school on Friday evening. In spite of many* counter attractions the schoolroom was well filled by parents and friends. Miss Mitchell Brown, in a few wellchosen words, reminded the audience that it was a students’ recital; and as such they were not to expect too much, especially from the little performers. The objecCof the recital, slie explained, was to bring out the children and accustom them to performing in public.. Although the programme was a long one the audience demanded encores for several items.

At the conclusion, Mr G. 11. Beatson spoke for the parents in terms of highest appreciation of the teaching ability of Miss Mitchell Brown, as shown m the work of her pupils.

The singing of the National Anthem and voles of thanks to Miss Esther for the use of her piano and to Mr O. A. Banner for his valued assistance broughta most enjoyable evening to a close.
