ASSURANCE TO BE GIVEN STATEMENT BY TRADES HALL OFFICIALS (Received 6th Dec., 10.40 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Following proceedings at the Arbitration Court a conference of the Management committee of the Watersiders’ Federation and the Australian and New Zealand Council of Trades Unions was held, and it was at one stage practically agreed that the strike should be declared off, but then a hitch occurred. Although it was claimed that unofficially overtures had been made to representatives of the shipowners, and agreement on practically all points reached, the secretary of the WarterfronthATA the secretary of the Watersiders’ Federation stated that the management committee had expected to receive a message indicating the intention of the Arbitration Court, but as no information was received the meeting adjourned until to-day. Other members of the committee expressed the view that the entire onus pf making arrangements for a conference between the. parties to. disputes should not he left to the Watersiders Federation to determine, and claimed that the shipowners should have taken the initiative iri the direction of convening the conference, failing action being taken by the. Court authorities, hut they declined to state what the Federation proposed to do regarding the assurances required by Mr Justice Booby for observing the award. Trades Uall officials who took a loading part, in negotiations during the day said that they strongly urged that the federation should pass the resolution required by Mr Justice Bechy, and that the Federal Management Committee had agreed to accede to> the. request. They also asserted that in addition to suspending the overtime strike the committee had consented to instruct the branches of the Federation to adhere

strictly to awards on'condition that a conference Avith the shipowners Avas arranged. Efforts Avill he renewed to-day in an endeavour to effect an immediate settlement of the dispute.
