NELSON THEATRES

CHANGE OF MANAGERS MR IRVINE ELSTON APPOINTED Mr Irvine Elston, the new manager of the Nelson picture theatres took over his position from yesterday. In conversation with a “Mail” representative yesterday afternoon Air Elston said that after nineteen years in the theatrical profession in many parts of the world he has decided to settle down. He had often heard of Nelson from various sources and the reports had been so good that he did not hesitate in accepting the offer of the present managership when it was made to him.

During the past five years Air Elston has been with the well-known Williamson firm for whom lie lias acted- as manager and in other capacities. He lias also conducted many famous artists through the Dominion and one of bis most pleasant memories is of the tour with' Fritz Kreisler the great violinist. The Chinese juggler, Long Tack Sam and his troups were also in charge of Air Elston during their first visit to New Zealand. The last time he was in Nelson was during the tour of Odiva and her performing seals. The new manager intends to bring about several changes in the running of Nelson’s present theatres and be says that his main object is to treat Hie public well and so gain their support. Hg_ also undertakes that there will be one set price with no fluctuations for special pictures excepting on very extraordinary occasions. He also says there will probably be some improvements made to the Empire Theatre itself. Air Elston says that Nelson can look forward to viewing the best films procurable. , As an important part of his policy Air Elston will do all in his power to attract outside companies to Nelson and be says that his past association with J. C. Williamson should be of material assistance. At the present time be is hoping to attract the Gilbert and Sullivan company at present in New Zealand to make a short visit to Nelson. The strike in Australia will probably interfere with the itinerary of this" company and that may help Air Elston in persuading them to play here. “The old Theatre Royal is of course a handicap,” said Air Elston, “but as soon as the new theatre is completed I think I can safely promise that Nelson Will be visited regularly bv Williamson’s latest attractions. ‘ Local amateur performances will not be neglected by Mr Elston who says that lie will do alt in his power to assist them with any shows they may wish to stage. Air Elston is looking forward to liis life in Nelson and hopes that he will be able to commence by making friends with the theatre-going public. .
