HAWKE CUP (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Several" proposals which had a hearing cn the Hawke Cup competition, for decision among The minor ■ associations of New Zealand, were before a .meeting of tlie management committee of the New Zealand Cricket Council last night. The proposals were held over pending the receipt of opinions from the associations regarding n resolution forwarded by the sub-committee from the conference of minor associations, that there be a second competition open to the lower divisions of minor associations, which would ho classified, for that purpose according to playing strength. NELSON-MART,BOROUGH MATCH (By Telegraph—Special to "The Mail”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. At a meeting of the management committee of the New Zealand Cricket Association it was decided that it be an instruction to all associations playing Plunket Shield and Hawke Cup matches to adhere to the appointed hours of play, and that l umpires be requested to take the field two minutes before time, as was done in England. With reference to the Hawke Cup, thtj Marlborough Association advised that it has been suggested that it and Nelson should play off for the right of challenge on Bth, 9th and 10th December, in time to give the council the winners so that it could draw up a list of matches to be played with the holdiers. It was understood that all preliminary matches were to be completed before 12th December.
It was suggested that the match he played in Blenheim as Marlborough gave way to Nelson last year, allowing the latter to challenge without first playing off with Marlborough. It was hoped the match would be the means of reviving cricket in Marlborough. The finances of the association were nil and public interest was small. SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCH (By Electric. DEFEATS FREE STATE (Received 29th November, 12.25 p.m.) CAPETOWN, 28th November. At Bloemfontein, the Free State, in the second innings made 236. Comma ille 54 and Holmes (not out) 61. Geary took threo wickets for 71 runs and Peebles three for 26. Marvlebone won by an innings and 164 runs. PAST AND PRESENT AT COLLEGE The annual Past v. Present match will he played at the College to-morrow afternoon at 2 o’clock. This match originated in 1908, and has always created great interest. The Old Boys team will he, selected from the following: Newman (2), James, Biggav, Neale, Miller. Heaps, Vorcne, Lnngbein, R. Eden. Simpson, Betts, Fowler, Blincoe.
