MOTOR REGULATIONS

VIEWS OP LOCAL BODIES

EXTENSION OF TIME REQUESTED

The Mayor of Nelson (Mr W. J. Moffatt) as president of the Municipal Association of New Zealand on Friday, sent the following communication to the Premier concerning the proposed Motor Regulations:—

“The time allowed for consideration of the Motor Regulations is altogether inadequate, and I request that the time be extended to allow the Municipal Association executive to fully, deliberate thereon at its meeting on 14th December. I suggest that the use of roads, etc., is so affected by the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act, the Public Works, Police Offences, Stock and Impounding, and other acts dealing with traffic, that a comprehensive Traffic Act is required to consolidate the provisions of all those acts and other acts affecting all classes of traffic, including pedestrian.” The Premier has replied as follows jt->i ‘‘Y'our telegram received and representations regarding Motor Regulations duly noted. They have been forwarded for consideration by the Minister of ‘Public Works.” Mr Moffatt states that the Government had asked that the recommendations of local bodies he forwarded by Ist December, in order that the regulations could ho. gazetted on 7th December. Tlie. view of the Municipal Association was that it was impossible for the Government to go through all recommendations bdforc 7th December. A suggestion luid been made that an emergency meeting of the. -executive of the Association be held to consider the regulations, but as this would have been attended by only a few representatives it- was considered advisable to ask for an extension of time in order that the full executive might discuss them. Copies of the telegram to Mr Coates were sent, to the. Minister for Public Works and to Mr H. Atmore, M.P. ACTION BY LOWER HUTT COUNCIL (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day The Lower llutt.Boiough Council decided to incorporate the new Motor Regulations in its by-laws.
