HAWTHORN HEDGES MUST GO statemuent bv minister REPLV TO KARMftR-S" PROTES'I (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. .Replying to a deputation from farmers of the Manawatu district protesting against being compelled to destroy all hawthorn hedges to prevent the spread of fheblight, the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. 0. J. liawken) said that in all probability the. disease would destroy the hedges and farmers would not have, a- single apple or pear tree. The hawthorn was a continual source, ol infection and it was all a. question oi what was the best thing to do. They should not allow infection it it could lie avoided. Hawthorn hedges ;im\ orchards could not go together. Eventually farmers would have to get rid of all such hedges. The onlv method of controlling iireblighl was to control the host- plant. They had got rid of if entirely in Auckland when, they had got rid of the hedges.
