Mr J. T. Brough, traffic inspector, in his report for the' month of May, stated that 212 drivers' licenses had been issued to date, representing a monetary value to the Borough of £53. Fourteen heavy traffic licenses had also beeu issued; and he hoped lo license another two shortly. The licenses represented in annual fees £l5O 6s 9d. Should the basis of the, distribution of heavy traffic fees, among the various local bodies interested in No. 11 area, remain the same as last year, the Motueka. Borough will receive a substantial increase.

Bar-king i'iaces.— To relieve the con-i gested areas of the Borough, the Inspector stated that two publicly notified parking places for cars were essential and suggested one. bet ween Stolirs and the Salvation Army Barracks',' to be lighted and a notice board erected, ami another in the vicinity of the Institute Hall, where congestion frequently occurs. Intersection' Discs.—For the furtherance of traffic control, tho placing of a driving disc in the centre of the J'ost Office iut'.-.set()(>■. suii? also at Swan Bond and a'. I'oole street- junctions, was suggested in the. report. School Danger.—Tlio establishing in lite neighbourhood of tho school of tin attractive sign to catch the eye of the driver, was yet another suggestion made, the sign to be a fairly broad white line painted 'across the street near KirkPatrick's depot, and the word "School" writen in block letters in the centre. While admitting that this method does nol coincide with the Automobile Association's standard signs, the inspector draws attention to the fact" that the close proximity of a dangerous intersection phis the additional menace to the school children in a. congested area oT the town, makes the position a serious one. 'flie report was received. The Mayor stated that although the traffic inspector's report was a lengthy one, all the details were necessary, as the various' points taken up would come within the province of the Works Committee.

Councillor Smith spoke of the danger otis state of Swan corner created through cars being left in tho vicinity ot Ivory's shop. Mr Brough said thai this could be obviated by regulations being enforced, i.e., "that no car be permitted to remain in one place unattended for more than ten minutes."

Councillor Staples remarked that regu I:, lions of this nature were far fetche for a small town like Motueka. it wa.

;'-graceful il a man, doing business wit. nine firm,- had to run and attend to liis ■ar every ten minutes.

Councillor Smith informed Councillor Staples that he had missed the point. He (Councillor Smith) did not suggest that such regulations should be enforced but, merely commented on the danger. Ivory's being on the corner—a congestion of cars in front of this firm's pre mises did create a danger. If the cars only stopped further up the street it would be all right. On the motion of Councillors Smith and Wratt, the. report was icie.rctt to the Works Com mittee to report oi. same at the next meeting.

BRASS BAWL)

DEPUTATION TO THE COUNCIL

A deputation from the Molueka Brass Hand, consisting of .Messrs ./. Wort and P. V. Knapp waited on the Council cu Tuesday evening with regard to an increase in subsidy. ~\lr Wort, in placing the matter before the meeting, stated that (lie deputation had been instructed to ask for a subsidy of £25. A similar amount had been solicited last year, but the Council saw fit to give only £ls then. There was an increasing need for funds, as the Band firstly desired some uniformity of instruments. £57/10/8 had been spent during the year on repair of instruments and purchase of music, etc. Secondly, it was necessary, in order to equip the Band efficiently to purchase another three instruments nt o cost of about £7O. The Band was also desirous of encouraging young men to join, and with this in view proposed starting a class for beginners with free tuition. Air Wort expressed the hope that this class would be taken advantage of by young players. The Baud, ho stated, was always happy to assist at functions and periodically gave public eiitei'tainineiUs. The instruments in their possession were now worth a good deal and, with the addition of the three previously mentioned l lie Council's asset would still be further increased. According to the balance sheet t'h<.Band had a credit of but this was offset by outstanding accounts amounting to £l7/14/-, the actual position being a debit of £5/4/5. If the Boxing Day Gala Committee's recommendation was adhered to, that the Board reserve £lO of its .share of the proceeds for future occasions, then their deficiency would be £ls/4/5.

.Mr Boundy, who was also one of the deputation, said that the Council must consider the matter from a community point of view. He thought that a body of men such as the Band, who were willing to give their services free, should be encouraged. It would be a lamentable thing if the Hand was allowed to die out on account of lack of support from Ibe Council and public. The grant of £25 he was sure would encourage the bandsmen. Before departing the deputation was promised that their case would receive due consideration.
