INCREASE TO BE RESISTED
(By Telegraph—Special to “The Mail”)
AUCKLAND, 9th June
A determination to resist any increase in the taxation on motor vehicles was expressed by members of the council of the Auckland Automobile Association last night. The secretary reported that a questionnaire circulated by the British Automobile Association had produced nearly 100,000 replies, of which 97 per cent, were in favour of the substitution of a petrol tax for the tax of £1 for each unit of horsepower. Mr (1. Henning said Ibe altitude in England was not necessarily a guide lor New Zealand motorists. The British motorist laboured under a heavy and inequitable tax. and accordingly welcomed the suggestion of a, petrol lax. Iho tire lax in New Zealand was more sat isfaetory, and motorists would have u> he careful no! to embrace any suggestion for a petrol tax if the imposition was to be ari addition instead oi a substitute.
Mr 11. C. Jones said hints of increased taxes on cars had been dropped, lull no confirmation could be secured. When motorists agreed to the flat licence tee of £2 a year in addition to the tire tax they had been assured the maximum of mntoa’ taxation had been reached. II the rumours assumed concrete form motorists should be prepared to resist anv increase in tire levy.
