SHANGHAI, Bth June. A thirty-six hour battle against Shantung troops on the border of Kiangsu and Shantung resulted in the Nationalists capturing Hanchwang, and making their first entry into Snantung province. Owing to the superior strategy and morale of the / Nationalists, the Shantungese were doomed to defeat, but they put up a remarkable defence behind strong fortifications until _ the Nationalists’ aeroplanes systematically bombarded Hanchwang. A Shantungese regiment mutinied, whereupon the commanding general surrounded most of the mutineers, a large number of whom were shot immediately, or fell beneath the executioners’ swords. Others fled, panic stricken.
