MOTUEKA

BOROUGH AFFAIRS

At the monthly meeting of the Motucka Borough Council, held on Tuesday, the Mayor (Mr J. A. Wallace) said that, although there Had been a meeting of tho Finance Committee, no statement would be brought forward until next meeting, as there vere several matters requiring correction. He did not wish it to be thought-, however, that he was casting any reflection on the previous Council.

Councillor: Clay, in support, stated that figures of last year’s trading were not complete, and this would have to be before bringing down a financial statement. , Preceding the election of a deputyMayor, Mr Wallace, in the course of hir remarks, said that this was his first appearance at the Council table for a number of years. Ho realised the responsibility of the position and was quite aware that the Borough was up against it financially. The problem of maintenance on low rating was creeping “in and the question had to he faced in a manner for the benefit of the Borough and ratepayers generally. Problems would come before the Council from time to lime; and he expressed the hope that the staff would do everything possible to help on these occasions. Personally, lie would always act in the best interests of the Borough. In moving that Councillor Wratt be re-elected deputy-Mayor, the Mayor remarked that it was necessary to have someone that could he relied upon and dependable.

Seconded by Councillor Canton. Councillor Clay, Speaking in support, said lie was pleased Councillor Wratt had been proposed, for he (Councillor Wratt) field tho confidence of the ratepayers and had had great experience in Council matters.

Councillor Staples remarked that they could not, have selected a, 'better man. Councillor Wratt had been returned at the head of the poll for several years. In reply, Councillor Wratt said, in view of tho flattering remarks, which he thought were not all true, Inj could not, do otherwise than accept the position. Time at his disposal for public affairs was limited and lie expressed the hope that he would not, be called upon too frequently to net, as Mayor. fl’lie Mayor informed the Council that so far the Electric Light Committee had not met,, as financial affairs had to he attended to first.
