VALUELESS CHEQUES
DTtUG ADDICT CHADDED (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, This Day. Douglas Charles Hopewell, described as a Canadian, was charged in the Police Court on several charges of obtaining money by means of valueless cheques. It was stated that accused was an officer in the Canadian Flying Corps, having been shot down into the German lines. Since, he hail been a drug addict, and his parents (his father being a judge of the. Supreme Court) sent him to New Zealand. He had visited many towns in the Dominion, cashing valueless cheques. He was recently ordered reformative detention at Invercargill. The Magistrate ordered accused to be detained for two years.
