NEW ZEALANDERS’ PERFORM MANGES

SYDNEY; 6th June

The weather was fine, with just enough wind to make golf interesting, for the Royal Sydney Cup at Rose Bay, when play commenced. All the leading New South Wales professionals as well as New Zealand, Victorian, and Queensland competed. At the conclusion of the first round Bowman and Denham (New South Wales) with a nett 74 led the field, with Howard, James, Carnegie Clark, and W. ClaTk all close up. Horton with 75-2—77, was ■ the best of the New Zealanders. He went.out,jn 34. Doctor Ross also played well, returning a 76-3—79. I

In the afternoon the steadiness of the professionals asserted itself and , W. Clark and Howard with 186-8—154,' tied for first place. Carnegie Clark was only one stroke worse. Horton again played well, but his feet were troubling him and he tired aver the last bit, finishing with 78-2 —80. His nett score of 157 gave him seventh place—the best performance of any of the visitors. Dr. Ross was again playing well and went out in 36, including a 7 at the seventh, and came back in 40. JL)uncan started well in the morning, doing the outward journey in 36 but could not sustain the effort and finished with 80. He did not improve in ' the afternoon, returning in 82 gross. Quin was patchy in the morning but in the afternoon played brilliantly coming home, finishing with 79 gross. Macfarlane played well in the forenoon for 80, but struck, trouble in _ the afternoon and returned with 87.

The Victorians Whitton and Russell made a bold showing, but found the handicaps too much. Die eliminating round of the Australian teams in the Kirk Windeyer Cup takes place to-morrow. The fine form displayed by the New Zealanders since their arrival has made them the most favoured for the international match. Horton and Duncan have become very popular and “ha,ve made a large following. .
