PRACTICAL SUPPORT NEEDED
THE Suter Art, Society, whose annual inerting is reported in another column, has for its general object, the promotion of art. in Nelson, and for its particular object, the support of the Suter Art Gallery. It promotes art chiefly by bolding one or more exhibitions each year. It supports the Gallery by providing the greater part of the funds necessary for its maintenance and by occasionally purchasing pictures to be bung ori its walls. The Society derives its funds, from annual subscriptions paid by an all-too-small number of citizens and from the net profits of the exhibitions. The Gallery Trustees have unfortunately' only the small revenue of £l2 10s from the School Society’s endowment to expend on maintenance, though from the Besley Bequest they desire £SO per annum to he spent on pictures. As the charges for caretaking, insurance and so forth amount to about £25 n- year, the Gallery simply could not be kept open hut, for the continued assistance rendered by the Suter Art Society. The Society’ therefore deserves the cordial support of all who have any 7 appreciation of art. An annual subscription of not less than ten shillings confers membership, and all who are willing to contribute should communicate with the bon. secretary, Miss ,T. Tomlinson, Richmond Avenue.
