RICHMOND BOROUGH COUNCIL
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The Richmond Borough Council held their fortnightly meeting -last evening. There wen present : Councillors 11. W.' Kelly, A. Muntz, O. Webby, -F. -Lusty,, J. G. -Price, mi <l -E. W. Cress. Owing to the -resign iLion of Mr Kifid, Or. J.f. W. Kelly was elected Mayor -for' the balance of the term, and on the declaration being read by the Town Clerk. Mr Kelly took the mayoral chair. Before the business of the Council commenced, CY. 11. W. Kelly who was absent from last meeting, expressed his regret that Mr Kidd had resigned, and hoped that their late Mayor would soon ho restored to Ids normal state of health. Cr. Kelly thanked the Council for electing him Mayor for the balance ot the term, and hoped that the- whole Council would work together and make the same progress in the future as they had in the past.
Accounts amounting to £54 B,s 5d wore passed for payment.
CORRESPONDENCE
The Nelson City Council forwarded a copy of the address to ho presented to Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess ot York.—The letter was received.
From the Post and Telegraph Department acceding to the request of the Council re fence frontage. As slock wore destroying shrubs belonging to the Fire Brigade, that body requested the Council to have the nuisance abated.
FOREMAN’S REPORT , The Borough- foreman reported that lower Queen street had been cleaned up and on inspection of taps had been made. Residents notified to clear (heir frontages of noxious weeds bad done so except in one case. The foreman and employees were granted a whole holiday on Saturday next.
GENERAL The Town Clerk informed the Council that the Stoke Road Board lind been written to re McShain’s road, but no reply had been received. On the motion of Cr. Muntz it was decided to pay the foreman for overtime done before Christmas. The Mayor pointed out that if damage was done to* the underground cables laid by the Post and Telegraph Department, the Council was liable, and moved that a plan of the tables be applied for. Carried.
Tim, Mayor reported on the conference hold in Palmerston North, and suggested that the Council hold a special meeting when lie would give information regarding road construction. —It was resolved to hold a special meeting on,2Bth Pebvunrv. -
EMPLOYMENT The Works Committee recommended that the Council’s own employees erect sheds to accommodate machinery. A motion to this effect was carried. Tlio Mayor explained that some difficulty had been experienced in keeping the Council’s staff employed and that, eiforts should be made to find regular work. Cr. Webby thought that there was insufficient work for three men. The expenditure in machinery should have reduced labour but so far more men hao been employed than hitherto. Cr. Price was of .opinion that Gladstone road was ill a disgraceful condition and grading should be done; but. other Councillors were in favour of waiting for a change in the weather. On the suggestion of the Mayor, Cr. Webby moved that 12yds of gravel be procured from Brightwater for pipe making. The foreman was informed that lie could commence work on the buildings immediately and in spare time build a platform necessary for the making of concrete culvert pipes. This being all the business the Council rose at 9.40 p.m.
