From returns collected by the Government Statistician ~il would appear lhat the commercial orchard most coin - nionly met with in. New Zealand is under five acres. More than hall the total area is divided into orchards of under 20 acres’ in extent. Last- yaer there were 1062 orchards under five acres; 746 between five and ten acres; 531 between 10 and 20. acres; 111 between 20 and 30 acres; 35 between 30 arid 40 acres; 12 between 40 and 50 acres; 13 between 50 and 75 acres; 5 between 75 and 100 acres, and 4 ov«' 100 acres. In the previous year there were six such orchards. The returns for the various Land Districts (including boroughs) also make interesting reading,.North Auckland heads the list of orchards under live acres, will) 288 orchards. Canterbury is next with 188, followed by Hawkes Bay 150 and Nelson 136. North Auckland is also to the fore with orchards between 5 and 10 acres in extent, returning 224, followed by Hawkes Bay 140 and Nelson 124.

Otago with 15 orchards heads the 30 lo 40-acre orchard classification. Nelson is second with 12 and North Auckland with 5 is third. Otago has six orchards 40 to 50 acres in extent. Nelson 4 and Hawkes Bay and Marlborough one each. In orchards 50 to 75 acres in extent Nelson comes first, with six, followed by North. Auckland three, Otago two and Marlborough and Canterbury one. North Auckland and Nelson each have two orchards between 75 and 100 acres, and Otago has one. The Wellington land district, which has only a comparatively small area in orchard in the aggregate, has one orchard of 116 acres, Nelson has one of 102 and Otago has two which together amount to 360 acres.
