MAHANA

ANNUAL SCHOOL CONCERT

To mark.the break-up of the Mahana school for the slimmer vacation the parents and residents of the district gathered at the school'on Wednesday evening last. iMiss iStade and her willing helpers had made the school look vc ''y gay with ferns, flowers and streamers, the school colours, red and black being effectively worked in. The rooni looked very pleasing, and was verv favdurably commented on by the" large audience. The entertainment was carried out entirely by the children of the school, the whole of the children, from the youngest up, doing their bit. A lengthy programme of 23 items was gone through, and from the opening "Welby two little tots to the "Goodnight ' tableau, there was not a dull •fern. Songs, recitations, gome very grad dialogues, and part singing made up the greater part of the programme, while some of the fine old English folkdances so pleased the audience that they insisted on a repetition, in spile of the chairman's ruling that time would not permit of encores. The playlets "Crooked Answers" and a scene from "Oliver I wist were greatly enjoyed, the juvenile performers quite entering into'their parts, and giying a really good rendering of the scenes.

Before asking the audience to sing the Rational Anthem the chairman >,Mr Jackson, congratulated the teacher, Miss Stade, and the children, and a very well deserved vole of thanks was carried. The opinion was freely expressed during the social hour which followed the concert, wlule tea and the numerous good things provided by the ladies of the district were being enjoyed, that .Miss Stade, on whose capable and willing shoulders all the work of preparation had fallen, had clone remarkably well, and had discovered and brought out an amount of latent talent in the children whicli their own parents did not know they pciv sessed.

During the evening daintv boxes of sweets made by the children and their friends were offered for sale and sold freely and an appeal for gramaphone records from the chairman brought such a ready response that the scholars should enjoy quite! a number of new selections during the coming vear.
