DANGER TO MOTORISTS

CORNERS ON WANGAMOA HILL TWO CARS MEET NARROW ESCAPE FROM DISASTER The dangerous corners on the Wangamoa Hilleare a considerable source of anxiety to motorists, and for some time past liie Nelson Automobile Association lias been active in endeavouring to induce the authorities to make tile road more safe to traffic. The dangerous condition of one of the worst corners was exemplified yesterday afternoon, when ‘two cars met about three miles up ttie Nelson side of the Hill. One of the cars, coming tG Nelson, was being driven by Mr G. Agar, of Christchurch, and the other by Mr C. Ivory, -who was going to Blenheim. Fortunately both cars were travelling at a slow speed, otherwise much more serious consequences might have arisen. As it was Mr Agar’s car was considerably damaged, while Mr Ivory’s car also sustained more or less damage. There were two passengers in Mr Agar’s car, but Mr Ivory was travelling alone. The impact was not sufficient to throw any of them out of their seats. Later in the day the cars were sufficiently repaired to be able to be brought’ into Nelson. Mr Agar, who lias motored extensively all over New Zealand, informed a ‘‘Mail ’ reporter to-day that the Wangamoa Hill lias some of the most dangerous corners of any road in the dominion. He emphasised the fact that if any cars meet on several of the corners nothing can prevent an accident. He states , that where the accident occurred yesterday the road is not wide enough to allow two cars to pass. Right on the corner is a telegraph pole, and the roadway is only about lift- i;i width. On the outside there is a sheer drop of about 500 feet, and bad lie tried to pass the other car he would have gone over the side, with consequences that can easily be realised. Mr Agar, who is a member of the 'Christchurch Automobile Association, intends to bring the matter before that body, as he is emphatic that unless something is done to improve the dangerous corners it will be only a, question lit time before disaster overtakes someone.
