The New Zealand gelding stepped a little timidly at. first. Rampion, who had the inside running was one of the smartest away and he was always in front, although many • were not impressed by his performance for the reason that Thracian had made him stretch out in the run home, and was only beaten by three-quarters of a length. -It must be remembered that Rampiou made all the running and the time was good under the existing conditions, being only a second outside Manfred's record for the race. The surprise of the race was the fine display of Thfacian who was never further back than third. Coming into . the straight Limerick made a smart move. It was so dazzling that it. looked as if he would come on and win. The effort, however, ceased .almost as sensationally as it began. He lost ground in the run to the post. The "Telegraph" says that Rampion made all the running to the turn but had to be ridden right out to stall off Thracian. Limerick's form was so ordinary that his Melbourne Cup prospoets are far from bright. There was verv little dash in his finishing run. The "Herald" says the Cantala, Stakes proved one of the most exciting finishes seen Cor sometime and gave Melbourne lacegoers an opportunity of witnessing the brilliancy of Amounis, who put up a great performance.
