ORCHARD TAX' EXPIRING REDUCTION OF EXPORT VARIETIES The Orchard Tax Act will expire next December, but the tax for this year is collectable, and the demands lor payment are now being issued. At their lasi annual conference the fruitgrowers urged that the Act should he renewed, but- the pressure of business last session made it impossible lor anvthing to lie done. It is expected lldif representations on the subject will he made next session.

The gross return from the tax is between £IBOO and £2OOO. but the cost of collection is fairly heavy. The net receipts front the tax are handed over to the Fruitgrowers' Federation to be expended in the interests of the growers. Matters relative to next year’s export of apples and the conditions under the proposed guarantee are now being gone into by the Agriculture Department, and consideration is being given to the question of the varieties and size of the apples that will he exported under the guarantee. The experience of previous years has gone to show that- the list of varieties for export is too large, and that adjustments tire essentials in the interests of the export trade. “The Post'' was informed yesterday ■' that the varieties that will he accepted for the coming year will in nil probability be considerably reduced. >•

A REDUCED GUARANTEE CONDITIONS FOR NENT SEASON (United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Governm'ent will continue the guarantee in connection with the entiling season's export of fruit, hut in a new form. The former guarantee provided for a penny a pound profit to the grower on exported fruit. Under the altered arrangement the Government will guarantee up to 10'6 u case of expenses involved in packing and marketing. By a grading and inspection system and export regulations the Government will insure itself against the export of unsuitable 5 fruit. . There..is- no specified limit to-' the quantity of exported fruit covered by- fire guarantee, which applies to Doth apples and-pears.
