S. Watkins are the. new \ ire presidents, and Messrs \ ivian Kkldil'nrd and C. W. Tringliain fill Ihe vacancies Hills created in Hue hsl ol I'Wil IN IS.

New Zealand l tip candidates to score t 1 1,,- Mai ton Meeting were Mall dong ml Beaumont, both of the 7-stmic disiion. ..Mali dong is generally regarded s possessing the. greater possibilities. It is stated that Lady Desmond will mi start in the Wanganui (.lumens. Her bsouee from the classic will rob the vent of a let of interest, but tbc nalerial left should still make lor a lmliing contest. Soatown is reported o ho all right again and a certain ,tarter to-morrow. He was so forward l tbc time of a slight inisltap it iortnglit ago that the let-up of it. few days vuuhl not allect him. _ A number of last year's two-year-olds vero seen out at Eeilding (writes ' V elctlc”J, the most notable being Emsk ncl Lady Desmond, while lesser lights vero Hyiuinnii, Inner Harbour, .loth, lemidar', Note, Alloway, Poyal lime, | vimill, Koval Came, Vertigern. Alysotl, d'iniax, Tea Time, and David Garrick, fotli Ladv Desmond and Kiosk did ■eallv well' whim pitted against that masoned and proved sprinter .Mireusontti be best possible trying tackle. Kiosk nrried 8.5 to tbe 8.8 of Mireusonta, and vent on tin: outside of lorn lor a little >ver live furlongs. and then retired. Ladv Desmond carried 7.13 to •lluiaiimtii's 9.3 on the second day, and also •need on tbe outside of him to the um. At this point she had settled the • Id horse, but could tint withstand Beaunonts finishing run. Doth performmces were good, for whereas Kiosk lad 61b more to carry. Lady Desmond stayed oil better. Kiosk, howevei, ooked as if Hie race would do him the ilost good. Of the others JTymuma and David Garrick pleased most, liynanna las crown into' a particularly uselul .hree n year-old, who, although lie might lot be equal to the very best, will not jo far behind them. There are distinct possibilities about David Garrick, but just how good ho will be it is us yet Jiliiculi to gauge. Alloway beat nothing of any account in the Novice stakes, but lie was not out of a canter Lo win. Easy victories in very poor 'ompany are often deceptive. , lemidar s showing was not very impressive, hut ho is a Martian, and may take time .Merry Day was finishing in great style in the Kairanga Handicap at A wap u u i on Saturday and was gallopijicr over everything nt the Finish.. She was only just beaten by Tame l'ox, whose weight (7.5) was luxurious after some lie lias carried in His palmy days. Tame Eox is an aged gelding by 3 olpone and it was his first win lot a long time. Totalisator takings on Saturday wore: Otago limit Club, £115,982 (£15,076 last year): Manawatu Hunt Club £11.113 £10,583 last year). Tanadees, '.Mask, Lvsander, Civility

and Kiosk have been registering some smart gallops at. Wanganui The race Kiosk had at Eeilding last week would do the three-year-old a power of good. (lay l iiinet did imt gel Hie best, of assistance in cither of liis laces tit Ecild-

Sonothing unusual it: the history of racing was recorded at the Marlon meeting last week. Dale Ogden started in the. Maiden, and there was not a ticket, recorded against bis number on the totalisator. It is interesting to mention that Dale Ogden is a hail-brother to tiie once great horse SasanoL who won Hie Melbourne Cup. Ladv Desmond was very bad at the post at the Marlon meeting on Thursday, and unless she soon mends her ways the schooling list will have lo be her place (writes "Carbine ’’). It is reported that !lie speedy but wayward maro is to be broken to harness in the hope of improving her behaviour. The race Ring Pot on ran at the .Marton meeting augurs well for bis prospect s in tlie near future. The distance m the Maraiigni Handicap at Wanganui slum Id suit . him.

The Auckland jockey, It. McTavisli, lias decided not io accept the retainer offered by Mr Erie Riddiford. McTavisli however, will be mi the burses at. Wan-

ganui. Black Cat bad been sorted nut as likely to win the Flying at Wanganui, in which event she had 7.9, hut she did not accept. She was not well placed two furlongs from home in the ! olograph Handicap at, Eeilding on Saturday, but was going so last down the straight its to look a certain winner soon. It is stated that Shut Eye will be put to the jumping game this season. Sunshol and l’artaga have Doth been turned out for some time. When next they are brought in they are to be under the supervision of W. l’ine. It is lmihy years since a three-year-old won the New Zealand Cup, the last to earn distinction being Indigo l , who deadheated with Witrslep in 1914, while prior to that Noctuifurni won in 1905. This year Kilperon, Kilbox, and High Gear are. eligible, all of them handicapped at the minimum.

Alaric should have done better than lie did at .Minton, lie must not her lost sight, ol at Wanganui. Labour .Morn, who won at .Marton, is reported to have jumped well. He has not raced much since he won a back hurdle race at Foxtun over two years

-Novar should be improved by the race he had at Marton. It will take a little more to get him properly wound up, but the son of Sarto and Bktckada was a good performer last season, and looks like being so again. Birthmark is likely to succeed before long Last season this gelding was a pretty fair performer. He made his first appearance this season at .Marion on Thursday and finished second with a gentleman rider aboard.

Grand Knight was at the Murtun meeting, lmt was nut raced. He looked to be in good fettle though lie will probably need a race to get him right. Kilfaire looks as though lie will be among the winners before long. He was going well at the finish of the lleatou Park Handicap at Marlon uu Thursday. Archeen was started on the first day of the Marton meeting, and after getting all the worst of the running came fast cn the outside lo get third position. With anything like a decent run across the lop, .Mireusonta would have had something to do to beat Archeen. Last season Tea Time was only started oti three occasions, and ran second in each of them. The Marton meeting was his next appearance, so that lie has not yet been out of a place. Tea Time is engaged at the Wanganui meeting. Royal Time, a three-year-old gelding by the Great Northern Hurdles winner. Cynic, from the Merry .Moment mare, Royal Moment, is apparently going to be useful this season. On the first day of the Marton meeting lie was well in tlio limelight in the second division of Hie Trial Plate, being one of Hie pacemakers for most of the journey, and just being beaten at the finish. On the second day lie finished third in the Novice Handicap. Royal Time was only raced once as a two-year-old fast season, when lie failed to get into a place, but liis running at Marton, which signalised his entry info racing as a three-year-old, augurs well for tjns youngster. He is trained by H. Hickey, at Hastings. and is worth keeping in mind. Enure should be improved by the. race he had at Marton, and should do better in the near future. He is on gaged at the Wanganui meeting. Beaumont put up a <jreut. performance lit winning the big sprint race at .Marton. He must have been eight lengths behind the field as they started to cross the top, but liis rider then brought him along on the outside and he was almost with the leaders at the top of the straight. He had no difficulty in getting in front and stayed there. Beaumont is a solid customer, and, furthermore, has a Jot of pace. High Pitch should run well at Wanganui to-morrow.

Nelson 801 l (Nelson Bingen—Bellllowcr), who was trained at Addington by A. Cox for several seasons, and who was sold at a moderate figure recently, is now being trained by N. L. Price at Socklmni.

The AtJslraliun-bred horse Happy Voyage has been purchased by A. Hendrickson and is returning to. New Zealand to take up stud duties in Canterbury. A couple of seasons ago Happy Voyage raced in this Dominion and proved himself a brilliant racehorse, winning numerous races and taking a mile record of 2m 4 l-ss. The trotters Peter Swift and Frisco Beau are reported to he standing up to their work in a satisfactory manner. It is a- considerable time since Peter Swift, who was one of the best trotters in the Dominion, displayed any form, but he is said lo ho ,showing signs of returning to liis lies!..

J. Sltaw Inis l'Torrie Bingen, Peter Dean. Peter .McDonald, Wailroon, Jewel Pointer and Bittern working usefully. l'Torrie Bingen is io be mated with Worthy Bend, but site is to race for a portion of the season before being retired.

Lou promising three-year-olds stand their ground in the New Zealand Derby Stakes, to be decided at the Metropolitan Trotting Club's Spring Meeting. Of this number four started in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes —Rich ore, Rev Logan, Audience, anil I’ntvonius —hut (here is every likelihood of (lie others being seen in commission before the race is decided. The noniiiittlions for (lie 1928 New Zealand Derby Slakes are. highly satisfactory, Hie list totalling 100 yearlings, and the principal contributors Lo the race are If. K. Nicoll 6, P. Watson 5, R. Morton's four-year-old gelding Riwiiru, by Man o' War from Bright Alice, recently broke his leg, and was destroyed. ITEMS FROM RICCARTON (By Telejrn.nh —Special to Tbe Mall.) CHRISTCTIERCD. This Day. The three-year-old Paper Boy, has done well lately, and he may add to his winning record before long. lie will probably he a visitor to Wingatui next month, in which ease he can he re-

yarded as a promising candidate for the Dunedin Guineas.

Paper ltose may accompany him on the trip. This mare is very light in condition, hut her form at the. Grand National meeting demonstrated that she has the gif'- of galloping and she only has to go or. the right way to win he share of races this season. Though Papier Iris done no work on the tracks lately ho has hern kept in regular exercise. Ilia injured foot is mending rarely, and il. Nurse should soon have mm ju active commission

again, in preparation for spring engagements. These include the New Zealand Cup, a race for which lie has many admirers, lie has given evidence that lie can stay tile mill' and a-quarter. which is as far as he lias been tried.
